Body Dysmorphia Therapy

Are Thoughts About Your Appearance Taking Over Your Life?

Most people have things they would like to change about their appearance. However, for those struggling with body dysmorphia, concerns about appearance can become overwhelming, distressing and all-consuming.

You may spend hours analysing perceived flaws, avoiding mirrors, checking mirrors repeatedly, comparing yourself to others, seeking reassurance, hiding parts of your body or avoiding social situations altogether.

These experiences can affect relationships, work, confidence and overall quality of life.

What Is Body Dysmorphia?

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a condition where a person becomes preoccupied with perceived flaws in their appearance that are often minor or not noticeable to others.

Common concerns include:

  • Skin

  • Weight

  • Shape

  • Hair

  • Facial features

  • Muscularity

  • Body proportions

The emotional impact can be significant, leading to anxiety, shame, low self-esteem and social withdrawal.

Body Dysmorphia Is About More Than Appearance

In my experience, body dysmorphia is rarely just about appearance.

Often beneath the symptoms lies:

  • Shame

  • Self-criticism

  • Perfectionism

  • Fear of rejection

  • Feelings of not being good enough

  • A need to gain worth through achievement or appearance

Therapy helps us understand these deeper patterns rather than focusing solely on the symptoms.

Body Dysmorphia in Men and Women

I work with both men and women experiencing body image difficulties.

For men, concerns often centre around muscularity, size, strength and comparison.

For women, concerns may involve weight, shape, appearance, food and self-worth.

Although the focus may differ, the emotional experience underneath is often remarkably similar.

My Approach

I take an integrative approach combining psychotherapy, CBT, ACT, Transactional Analysis, attachment theory and psychoanalytic thinking.

Together we explore:

  • The origins of self-critical beliefs

  • Emotional triggers

  • Relationship patterns

  • Coping mechanisms

  • Self-worth and identity

The goal is not simply symptom management but creating a healthier relationship with yourself.
